Do clear phone cases turn yellow?
Most clear phone cases go yellow eventually, and the culprit is almost always TPU, the soft flexible plastic used for the sides and often for the whole case. UV light, heat and the oils from your hands slowly change it. Polycarbonate, the harder plastic used for the back panel, holds its colour far longer.
Why do clear cases go yellow in the first place?
Three things do most of the damage, and they are cumulative rather than sudden.
- UV light. Sunlight breaks down TPU over time. A phone that lives on a car dashboard or a sunny windowsill ages much faster than one that lives in a pocket.
- Heat. Wireless charging, a hot car, a radiator. Heat speeds up the same reaction that UV starts.
- Skin oils and everyday grime. Your hands transfer oil constantly and it soaks into soft plastic. This is the one people underestimate.
Cheaper cases also yellow faster, simply because thinner, lower grade TPU carries less UV stabiliser.
How long does it usually take?
There is no honest single number, because it depends far more on how a case is used than on how old it is. A case that sits in direct sun daily can warm noticeably within a few months. The same case kept in a bag and wiped down occasionally can look fine for well over a year. Anyone quoting an exact timeframe is guessing.
What are etchd clear cases made of?
Polycarbonate for the back panel and TPU for the sides. That combination matters for this question.
- The back panel is polycarbonate, which is considerably more UV stable than TPU. It is also where the design is printed, so the part you actually look at is not bare clear plastic.
- The sides are TPU, because that is what gives a case its grip and its shock absorption. TPU is the right material for the job, and it is also the part most likely to warm in tone over a long life.
So the realistic answer for an etchd clear case is that the frame can take on a slightly warmer tone after long exposure, while the printed back does not go yellow the way an all over TPU case does. We would rather say that plainly than claim a case never changes, because every clear plastic changes eventually.
Can you stop a clear case from yellowing?
You can slow it down meaningfully.
- Keep it out of prolonged direct sun. Dashboards are the worst offender.
- Wipe it with a little soap and warm water every few weeks, to lift skin oils before they soak in.
- Let the phone cool rather than wireless charging it inside a hot car.
- Avoid alcohol wipes and harsh solvents, which attack the surface and can cloud it.
What does not work is bleach, boiling water, or the various internet tricks promising to reverse yellowing. Once the plastic itself has changed, it has changed.
Is a printed case a better bet than a plain clear one?
If yellowing bothers you, yes, and for a simple reason. On a plain clear case the whole back is bare plastic, so any change is spread across the thing you look at every day. On a printed case the back carries the design, so the clear element is reduced to the frame. That is not a trick, it is just where the material sits.
