What is a magnetic power bank?
A magnetic power bank snaps onto the back of a compatible phone and charges it wirelessly, so there is no cable and nothing to hold together. It is the most convenient way to top a phone up while you are still using it. The trade off is that wireless charging is slower and warmer than plugging in.
How does it attach?
Magnets in the phone or the case line up with magnets in the power bank. On an iPhone with MagSafe, or on any phone in a magnetic case, it clicks into place and stays there while you carry it around.
If your case has no magnets it will not hold. That is the single most common disappointment with these, and it is worth checking before you buy.
Is it slower than a cable?
Yes. Wireless charging loses energy as heat, so it is slower than a wired top up and the phone runs warmer. For an overnight charge or a fast top up before you leave, use a cable. For keeping a phone alive through an afternoon without being tethered to a wall, magnetic is the better experience.
When is a magnetic power bank actually worth it?
- Travel days and long commutes, where you want to keep using the phone while it charges.
- Events and festivals, where there is no socket and a dangling cable is a nuisance.
- Anyone who forgets to charge overnight and needs to catch up on the move.
It is less useful if you are mostly at a desk within reach of a plug.
